Sky by Broadband uninstall

I’ve noticed over on AVForums that some people are unsure as to what get’s installed, and more importantly how to remove it.

Well what it installs, the main part of Sky by Broadband is not the part you see, it is actually a P2P service (Kontiki), this is the meat and bones of the SBB application, as this actually does the downloading/uploading parts (just as a side note, the BBC trial uses this P2P application as well). Ports used by this application seem to be 80, 443 and 8080.

The less significant, but more visible part is the Flash based front end of the application that allows you to choose what to download or watch.

The third and final part of the application is actually Windows Media Player 10, this is what is used to actually play the video back again (all downloaded video’s use Microsoft’s DRM for ‘protection’)

Now to remove the application?

First do a standard Windows uninstall of the Sky by Broadband application, this however usually does not remove the Kontiki stuff, for that their is an application supplied by Kontiki to do the job (Download here).

Obviously you could then uninstall the Windows Media Player 10 package from Windows as well, however no real point.

The last thing? Well I have been asked how to ‘Un DRM’ the files downloaded, well it can be done, no security is infallible, however it is certainly not a simple task. If you would like to research this then have a look here.

OMAP OC

For those users (like my Wife, and my C550) that have OMAP processors in their phones/devices you will want to have a little download of the application below.

I will not take responsibility for any damage but this little application can overclock your OMAP processor, this gives you more horse power at the expense of battery life.

Give it a go, it may come in handy (especially on the Wizard based devices, that are a little under powered from standard)

I would not recommend you running overclocked 24/7 as the battery life downsides would become a pain, but for those applications that make your device seem like it’s powered by treacle it could be handy.

2X Secure RDP

A great little free tool to increase the security for Microsoft RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) has been released.

It allows you to filter access to the login prompt on things like IP, MAC, Name and the sorts.

It’s a great tool, so download it and see what it can do for you.

HD-TV

So then, the last time I wrote about what TV to get, I was set on a Panasonic Plasma of either 37 or 42 inches.

Well the wife had a think, and said no, 37 is too big, my mistake? I took her to the local Panasonic dealer and setup a side by side viewing of the 37 and the 42, hoping I could stear her in the 42″ area; what a mistake, after seeing 37″ in the flesh I was told it was too big for the room, Damn! Well it sort of made my decision I have bought and take collection shortly of a very fine Panasonic TX32LXD52 LCD screen.

LCD, yes I know Plasma is ‘better’ as the blacks are better defined and they are 42″ but hey, I was told 32″ so that is what I have bought. It has HDMI input, the same panel as the Panasonic TX32LXD500 and for £1000 it’s not badly priced.

The XBox360 should hook upto 1080i very nicely, and from all the reviews I have read the ‘52′ is the best HD LCD there is at the moment.

Let’s hope it is as good as the one in the Panasonic shop (brought it in and ran some Sky, DVD and HD on it). It looks great aside from some of the lower definition channels on Sky.

Should get me by for a few years at least, just hoping now it has no dead pixels!

Let you know what it’s like when it’s delivered, oh bought it from Empire if you would like to know as the Panasonic shop wanted £1500 for it.

QuickTime 7.0.3

Finally Apple have released a bloatware free version of QuickTime 7.0.3 (No iTunes).

Pop over to Apple and download the installer and get yourself QuickTime without the bloat.

iPod 5G?

Over at http://live.ilounge.com/ they have some nice photos of what they believe could be the "One More Thing"

Both Mac Rumors and iLounge are being hammered at the moment. The Apple event doesn’t start for a while yet, but the site’s are all getting crammed with traffic.

If the device comes out and (will probably support video in one form or another) has video support for videoPodCast’s of sorts then that will be ace, and my 40Gb Gen 3 will be going to eBay’s direction. Toshiba have announced that their 80Gb drive is going to be used, so that probably means 30/80Gb choice.

We will see after the press event. For now though try
