PDF’s are Bad!

Or at the moment at least they are. A new security flaw has popped up (Here and Here).

Want an example? Try Clicking this, it's ok though that will not do anything nasty.

The good news? It seems that FoxIt on Vista (either IE or Firefox) does not exibit the behaviour, however at the moment (as Justin has said) it looks like pretty much all versions of Adobe's Acrobat plugin do exibit the issue.

So my advice? Pop over to Foxit Software for there PDF reader, not only does it not have the issue, it's a good deal faster and smaller as well.

Hive 7

I’ve just come across an interesting little site, Hive7 is a sort of a second life type thing. Why am I writing about it? well it’s all done in the browser! no downloads, no ActiveX’s all javascript and the likes.

It’s really impressive what can actually be done inside the browser if you try hard enough (Thanks to Scrobleizer for the heads up)

Minty goodness

A new release of Mint has been released to the world, version 1.28 does the following

v128
- [060222] This update requires you to reenter your Activation Key. From Mint 1.28 forward the key will be stored in $Mint->cfg (in anticipation of one-click updates–provided I can work out the security/piracy implications) Your Activation Key can be found in your
original purchase email or in the Mint Account Center
- [060224] Reverted to the record/js.php from Mint 1.26 (A number of users have reported significant discrepancies in their total/uniques with 1.27, since I cannot reproduce the issue I am rolling back for now until I can isolate and resolve the problem)
- [060222] Added compact privacy policy to convince IE PC to eat cookies in certain fringe instances
- [060221] Add ?moved query command to remap the installVars after moving Mint to a new location on the server

Pepper
- [060222] Updated all official Pepper to prevent viewing class.php directly in the browser (which would otherwise result in a fatal error because the parent Pepper class is undefined outside of the context of Mint)
- [060215] Updated Default Pepper (v126) Added descriptive text to the Pages Watched Favelets preferences

Sky by Broadband uninstall

I’ve noticed over on AVForums that some people are unsure as to what get’s installed, and more importantly how to remove it.

Well what it installs, the main part of Sky by Broadband is not the part you see, it is actually a P2P service (Kontiki), this is the meat and bones of the SBB application, as this actually does the downloading/uploading parts (just as a side note, the BBC trial uses this P2P application as well). Ports used by this application seem to be 80, 443 and 8080.

The less significant, but more visible part is the Flash based front end of the application that allows you to choose what to download or watch.

The third and final part of the application is actually Windows Media Player 10, this is what is used to actually play the video back again (all downloaded video’s use Microsoft’s DRM for ‘protection’)

Now to remove the application?

First do a standard Windows uninstall of the Sky by Broadband application, this however usually does not remove the Kontiki stuff, for that their is an application supplied by Kontiki to do the job (Download here).

Obviously you could then uninstall the Windows Media Player 10 package from Windows as well, however no real point.

The last thing? Well I have been asked how to ‘Un DRM’ the files downloaded, well it can be done, no security is infallible, however it is certainly not a simple task. If you would like to research this then have a look here.

Blogburst

Blogburst has been getting a fair bit of blog time recently, not sure what it will bring to the blogosphere, but I’ve asked for my invitation (currently it’s an invite only process).

What will it do for me? probably very little besides drive some more traffic this way, but hey I’ll give it a try ;)

Wordpress 2.0 RC3

Just to say the few issues I had with the previous beta builds are gone… I recomend everyone to download the RC3 build (linked below).

Google Analytics

I bumped into Google Analytics today. Wow! I’ve been using one of the WordPress plug-ins (ShortStats), and I will continue to, however I will give Google’s free stuff a go.

The information is presented in a very pretty way with pic’s of countries of origin and graphing. The data is all mine-able and seems a nice interface to play with, oh and the now Google must, the Ajax is all in there.

Pop over and give it a go for yourself. Talking of new thing’s over at Google, Google Base is in beta, this allows you to add almost any information to the database and make it search-able.

WordPress on IIS

With Dan’s help I’ve got WordPress up and running on my IIS box.

It really is not difficult at all, All you have to do is install PHP, MySQL, and WordPress. Then make sure you create a php.ini file in the root of the website with the following 2 lines

cgi.fix_pathinfo = 1
cgi.force_redirect = 0

Once that is done it should all go without a hitch. All I now have to do is to sort out the 404 page so it’s not the IIS default one.

For a more in depth guide on IIS and WordPress pop along to WalkerJohnstone.net as JB has put together a decent guide to get the lot all happy together on one box. (I myself am using 2, one for IIS and PHP, the other for MySql and SQL Server as it happens).

Update – Just noticed the sidebar is not rendering very nicely in FireFox, not really sure why, but it’s too late to be CSS’ing so it will wait till the morning. Sorry to Mozilla users.

Update 2- So I could not goto bed with it broken, now fixed  and now to bed before the wife shoots me
