Some PSP goodness

I have been neglecting my PSP posts for a while now, so here we go with some PSP goodness.

  • First off we have Joystiq’s guide to PSP and XBox360
  • MPH has got a nice Firmware launcher (Still buggy), but it does launch 2.5 firmware for 5 minutes or so. Pop along here to get the latest on that (Local download of 1.3). Sowith a little luck we will be able to run firmware 2.5 on 1.5 firmware, allowing you to play with all the 2.5 goodness.
  • Whole bunch of loaders (Fastlauncher 0.5 through 0.8, devhook 0.22, and others) in a 4mb zip here

I will set some time aside to get back up to date on the PSP stuff, hopefully before 360 (Friday) but no promises ;)

PSP V2.0 Loader v0.7

Well then, I thought this would happen sooner or later. It seems that Fanjita has got his boot loader (now on v0.7) booting quite a few EBoot’s now (List Here and Here). If you want the benefit’s of PSP v2.0 and the applications you run are in the OK lists (Note will not launch Devhook or Fastloader yet), then this is what to do.

  • First Download the Sony PSP v2.0 EBoot (Local Copy 17Mb)
  • Copy the above file to psp\game\update and name it EBOOT.PBP
  • Goto the Update run on the game menu and run it (make sure you have power plugged in)
  • Copy the contents of the PSP 2.0 Firmware Loader (400k) to the root of the memory card
  • Now use the PSP Photo Viewer to open the EBOOT Loader folder to launch the application.

This is a great advancement in the world of launchers for V2.0 PSP’s. With a little luck Fanjita can get it to launch kernel mode applications properly then we can all update to V2.0 firmware.

Where Sony waiting and did they know?

So the question that needs asking now is did Sony know about the iPod Gen5? Sony today released the v2.5 PSP firmware which, to be honest; makes the iPod’s new video ability look a bit out of date!

Sony are saying why download the video after they have been aired when you can watch whatever is on the TV now.

Sony Location Free TV will allow you to watch your TV on the move from your PSP (as long as you have a WiFi link).

So this all sounds pretty impressive? it is, however there are some slight downsides, these are Price : Costs about $300 for the base unit that sits at home, Bandwidth : Requires 300KB/s downstream connection at the PSP end, this however means you will need a similar bandwidth at the home end, in the UK that causes problems as most cable/DSL connections only have 128kb/s upstream connection.

So again, another product that wont quite work in the UK.

If only someone would create something that could hook into my Sky+ and allow me to transcode my unwatched/saved shows onto my mobile device then I would buy it now.

So my recommendation for the moment is to keep hold of the v1.5 firmware on your PSP and pay all the great homebrew out there.
