Cheers mikinho, I don't bother with any zip tools, if I need to unzip something then the vista built in stuff is usually good enough. If not I usually do it via the network from my laptop. But if the VMC PC is the only one around or access to it from remote location is no good then yes 7-Zip or WinRAR are useful tools to have on the box.

As for speedfan, I've never found the use for it, I make sure my fans/components are quite enough to not worry me even when running at high speeds. The only one I clock down is the GPU one, as that's less easy to replace with something quiter.

I would probably run SpeedFan (as I do on my other machines) if there was a VMC interface for it, that would make life easier, and more useful.

Sorry to post again but your "essential" software matches mine so closely that I wanted to mention two others on my essential list. Neither is directly Media Center related but I still consider them must installs on HTPCs (and like you I consider myself a minimalist)

1- 7-Zip - http://www.7-zip.org/

A free open source file archive manager. I can't stand how bloated WinZip, WinRar, WinACE are. 7-Zip is bloat free and with the exception of ACE handles almost all compression formats. I associate it with all its supported formats except zip, iso and cab.

2- Speed Fan - www.almico.com/speedfan.php

"SpeedFan is a program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips."

If you motherboard supports it SpeedFan can auto adjust your fan speeds. This is nice for a HTPC to help lower the fan noise levels.

Nice writeup. Two comments:

1- For ArcSoft I'd include a comment that it is 32-bit only.

2- For the useful tools I'd suggest ImgBurn (http://www.imgburn.com/). In combination with AnyDVD HD it lets you bulk create Blu-ray ISOs, not to mention it is a free and more importantly bloat free CD\DVD ISO Burner.
